Help for those times when it might feel like we are talking in another language. If there is something that sounds like martian, jargon, JOB-speak, techo-talk or nonsense, check out definitions here quickly and easily.  They can set you straight fast.

Ad templates – ready to go, stylish ad layouts.  Pick the one you like best and as you fill in the blanks with your ad words, we’ll make it look slick and appealing.

Advertiser directory – handy for all members, this is a listing of every advertiser who has posted ads. You can find them alphabetically and see the information they have made available for members. Data is taken from their registration details and their employer profile.

Advertiser tagging - Tags are words or phrases included with ads that will be included in candidate searches if they match. Tags increase the ability for suitable candidates to find the ad.  They allow the advertiser to use key words or phrases to attract the right candidates. 

Ajax – Is technology that gives our users a much more fluid and dynamic experience. It speeds up the site’s ability to refresh and capture data without any waiting period. This means it allows people to find each other quickly and easily.

Application tracker – is a function in My Broadcast that allows members to keep track of all the job applications they have made in one central location.

Assessment – A way to determine which candidates are the best for the job.

Associations & Bodies – Organisations created to serve their members, usually in an industry, profession or role.  They typically promote the members’ interests and provide them with relevant services. They can be valuable sources of information, advice, education etc for growing careers.

Availability – You can set your broadcast to let others know where you are at in your career and what kind of contact you would be open to.  If you are a contractor, you can identify when you will be available next.  You might only want to use this site for networking. Perhaps you are already available.  Availability lets you broadcast this so that you make the best connections for yourself.

Blog – short for web log.  Blogs allow users to communicate publicly their opinions, thoughts and notions on relevant subjects. 

Bookmark – a tool for keeping track of people or advertisers.  Candidates can bookmark advertisers to keep their eye on new roles that might come up in their organisation.  Advertisers can bookmark people so that they can keep track of them as they grow their career.

Broadcast – your career control centre. You can search jobs, help jobs and opportunities come to you and manage your career from every aspect. This is your area to promote yourself through creating your own profile and personal portfolio. Show people who you are and what you are capable of.  The more you add and make public on My Broadcast, the more others can know about you, your work experience and your skills.  Add a photo or video of yourself describing who you are and what you are about, create a portfolio of your past work by uploading images and videos in addition to your resume and tag yourself using words that describe you to make it easy for people to find you. Store your resumes, cover letters and other documents, keep track of your job applications  and manage your network.

Business network – The network of people you decide to include that are business contacts worth keeping in touch with.

Chat – a way to communicate through web based texting.

Competency based questionnaire – a candidate screening tool for advertisers that allows them to use an interactive program to pick up to 10 competencies which are essential for the role. A series of questions is prepared and provided for use during the interview process based on the selections made.  These allow the advertiser to review a candidate’s competency against those deemed to be essential for successfully performing the role. Competitions – We regularly run competitions with great prizes. Only registered members can play and win.

Content – the subject material that is included on this site.

Contractor register – a tool for contractors to use to notify people of their availability or when their current assignment will end.  This ensures they have the best possible chance of moving to their next assignment easily.  Advertisers can book them up ahead of time.

Cookies - are small files that are stored by this site and other websites on your computer.  They allow us to remember your preferences and will mean that you will need to enter your password less often. They also allow you to use certain features on this siite.

Corner – a part of My Broadcast for you to name and include information as you wish. You can also choose to make it public…or not.

Cover letter – letter accompanying resume that outlines why you would be suited to the role.  A good one will stop your resume from being overlooked in the pile of other applicants.

Customised ad template – Advertisers who wish to do so can design their own ad template with corporate colours and graphics to use in their job ads on this site.  They maintain the power and consistency of the company’s brand in job ads on the site.

CV – short for Curriculum Vitae – another term for resume.

Details – the log of personal information that is compiled and completed by our members.  It contains useful data to help us make the site work for them.  Details can be changed by our members at any time and should be updated regularly as work or personal circumstances change.

Digital resume – a resume compiled online via this site.  As opposed to a word or PDF file, the contents of a digital resume can be searched and discovered by our users (but only if you want them to be!). This can help  advertisers and other members find you for networking, jobs, mentoring etc.

Director register - is a tool for directors to use to list directorships and whether they are available for director positions. This ensures they have the best possible chance of getting their next seat on the board.  Advertisers can identify and contact them if they have an opportunity within their organisation.

Employer brand – your reputation as an employer is your employer brand.  You may be known for work-life balance, great remuneration, eco-friendly policies etc.  Through this site you can enhance and promote your employer brand and attract relevant candidates by managing Employer Profile in My Desk.

Employer profile – this is the means through which you can promote yourself as an employer on this site.  We give you the ability to include video.  A powerful way to connect with the right candidates.  You can link to your website, attach key articles or documents that outline who you are as an employer. All advertisers profiles are viewable and searchable by members.  The candidates could just find you!

Expatriate – a local resident who has been living in another country for a period and either has returned home or is planning to.  They may have specific challenges in returning to the workforce if they have been away a while and need to connect with the locals.

FAQ – short for frequently asked questions.

Google mapping – the use of google technology to use street address to create a maps for the address the job is located at. 

Industry – a segment of the economy concerned with production of goods or services of a particular kind.

Integrator – company that coordinates bulk job ad postings from advertisers to web sites like this one.

Job advertiser – the dudes that list their job ads on the site.

JOBLocal – the tool for finding a truly local job on this site.  It relates your postcode search to all available jobs that match that postcode.  You can slice and dice from there to find the local job that matches your requirements for industry, role, profession, salary etc.

JOBNow – the tool for finding jobs that need you to start right now.  They are ready to go when you are.  You won’t have to interview.  Arrangements are made by phone or email and you simply turn up as instructed.

JOBReferral – lets you refer interesting jobs to your mates who might be looking for their next move in return for rewards from the advertiser.

JOB express help – help pages where you can find help fast.

Links – dynamic connections to other web pages or websites.

Main account – When advertisers set themselves up on this site, the main account contains the details for the organisation, including company name, ABN number etc.  It is typically established by the main person in the company responsible for recruitment.  They are then able to then set up sub-accounts under the one main account for other people in the organisation who still need to post ads and want to be able to do this themselves.  The employer profile is drawn from the main account.

Manual posting – the process of posting job ads to the site through data entry (as distinct from via a third party integrator).

MAPP assessment tool – an on line assessment that helps you work out what you want to be when you grow up!  A great way to work out just what is the right job for you.

Multimedia – the part of the site where podcasts, webinars, videos, competions, wiki and other fun stuff lives.

My Broadcast – your career control centre. You can search jobs, help jobs and opportunities come to you and manage your career from every aspect. This is your area to promote yourself through creating your own profile and personal portfolio. My Desk – is especially for the advertiser. It will update you on your confidential job and application statistics, your employer profile, bookmarks, searches, shortlisting tools, HR & recruitment tools, account details and a secure communication centre. My Desk helps you manage your desk.

Network – the people you have invited into your world.  Your network consists of people who you want to stay in touch with for professional or personal reasons using this site.

Newsletters – electronic updates that will keep you informed on what is happening in the world of work, careers, recruitment, and this site etc.

NFP – Short forNot For Profit’ – organisations such as unions, sporting clubs, professional associations etc which operate to service the needs of their members rather than for financial return.

Notes – This site gives you the ability to record your own ‘notes’ against job ads that you have added to your shortlist. This might be comments to remind you of key details, record your thoughts, impressions of interviews, keep track of things you want to ask at interview etc.  Anything that is useful to you. Only you will be able to see your notes.

People search – functionality that allows you to search for people by name, by tags, by university, by previous employer etc.  The search will include matching results for any member who has chosen to make those details public (ie they have included them in their public broadcast).

Podcast – a digital media file or a series of such files that is distributed over the Internet for playback on portable media players and personal computers. This site has a stack of podcasts on career and other topics that may be interesting to our members.

Polls – This site runs multiple choice questions and answers on key topics.  They allow us to gather data from our users. Polls require simple mouse clicking on the response that matches best from the options presented.

Post ads – the process of uploading a job ad to the site so it is publicly viewable, searchable etc.

Posting – an entry on an internet site or the process of making a entry to a blog.

Profession – an occupation, vocation or career where specialised knowledge of a subject, field or science is applied.

Profile – your own brand, whether you are a member or an advertiser.  It’s how the rest of the world sees you through this site and you can include whatever you want to in yours. What you choose to make public on My Desk or My Broadcast will ultimately make up your profile.

Promotional codes – from time to time, this site may offer discounts or free advertising to certain parties.  Promotional codes are keyed when advertising a job. This ensures the discounts are calculated and the appropriate offers are honored accordingly.

Psychometric tests – tests which measure knowledge, abilities, attitudes, and personality.  In recruitment, they are utilised to ensure a good fit between a candidate and the role to improve the selection process.

Public broadcast – the details in ‘My Broadcast’ that you have chosen to make publicly viewable.  This may include your photo, your resume, your video, your tags etc.

Rate the Advertiser – the tool by which candidates can score or rate advertisers in terms of their overall experience.  It’s this site’s way to hold advertisers accountable for how they treat their candidates and promote organisations who are consistently excellent this area.

Recruiters – people who recruit as a profession on behalf of another organisation.

Referral – the process of introducing your friends or colleagues to potential employers for a job role.

Referral rewards – rewards payable to a referrer for introducing a person to a potential employer who is subsequently successful in winning the role.  It’s a bit like a spotters fee. The reward may be in the form of cash or other goods and services. Refer your mates and be rewarded.  They could just end up with their dream job too!

Registering – the first step in using this site effectively.  Registering gives you many benefits over simply searching.

Resume - also known as a curriculum vitae (CV), is a document containing a summary or listing of relevant job experience and education, usually for the purpose of obtaining an interview when seeking employment.

Role – another name for position.

Salary - a form of periodic payment from an employer to an employee, which is specified in an employment contract.

Screening – the investigation of a large number of people looking for those with a particular attribute or skill.  A process of narrowing down the available pool of suitable or matching people – typically job candidates to find the most appropriate match.

Screening questions – questions on job ads that allow advertisers to narrow down suitable candidates by asking them questions on key aspects of the role such as years of experience, whether they hold specific qualifications, skills etc.  this site allows advertisers to create their own screening questions when they are posting their job ad.

Search companies – functionality that allows you to search for companies on this site.  You are able to search companies by name or by industry.  The search will include matching results for any company who has posted job ads on the site.

Search jobs – functionality that allows you to search for jobs on  this site.  Any word that appears on any part of any matching job ad, including tags will be included in the results returned.

Search People– functionality that allows you to search for people.  You are able to search people by name, by tags, by university, by previous employer etc.  The search will include matching results for any member who has chosen to make those details public (ie they have included them in their public broadcast).

Search site – functionality that allows you to search site content.  Keyword matches will return anything that is not a job or a company.  Great for finding content if you can’t remember where it was on the site!

Sector – criteria we have included that will allow you to identify and distinguish in your searches the sector that the job is in eg public, private, charity etc.

Seminar - a form of academic instruction offered by a commercial or professional organisation. It brings together small groups for meetings, which focus on a particular subject with those present typically being requested to actively participate.

Shortlist – if you are looking for a job, a shortlist is a list of potentially suitable job ads that you have selected from an initial job search on the site which match what you are looking for and are worth of further exploration. If you are an advertiser, a shortlist is the list of people who are worth further exploration as potential employees from the initial responses to the ad.  They might be candidates worth interviewing, calling etc.

Slice & dice – the ability to search within a pool of search results by key sub categories such as industry, sector, salary etc without losing the ability to return to the full results.  Slice & dice lets you go on a search journey and look at results a number of different ways depending on your mood.

Social network - a social structure comprised of individuals that are connected by web links.

Spam – unsolicited bulk email messages.

Statistics - the collection, analysis, interpretation or explanation, and presentation of data. Statistics on this site

for advertisers include their current and archived ads, applications etc.

Surveys – tools through which we gather qualitative data from our users.

Tag – a word or phrase that is linked to either a candidate: which describes their personality, skills background etc or a job ad: which further identifies or explains the role or the type of person who would fit best.

Tagging – candidate – candidates ‘tag’ themselves to nominate key words or phrases that are typically skills, features or attributes that best describe them.

Template – a blank form or background that we have provided.  You fill in the blanks to suit your requirements.

Tips – pointers from the  team to get you off and running or to help you navigate the site quickly and easily.

Tools – This site has a bundle of tools to assist job seekers and job advertisers ranging from resume templates to background checking.  Use them if you want to.

Track talent – by bookmarking people, you can track their movements over time.  If they aren’t quite right for your current positions, they could very well be ideal for the next one or when they have some more experience under their belt. You can also track talent by searching for people on the site and finding those that meet roles you may be recruiting for. They can be searched by skill, background, tags, etc.

Tutorial – an on-screen lesson that we have prepared to show you how to use key features of the site.

URL – short for Uniform Resource Locator. A means through the web to identifying and locate a resource by describing its primary access mechanism eg its network ‘location’. This site gives users the ability to create their own URL so that they can be found.

User community – the community of users on this site. It is made up of members, advertisers, providers etc and we make it easy for them to connect with one another.

Verify CV – an organisation that this site  has partnered with to provide background checking services for advertisers or for candidates wanting to get the jump on the competition.

Video broadcasting – by including a video on your ‘My Broadcast’ and making it part of your public profile you are broadcasting your video to the world. Coming soon!

Video interviewing – mechanism for conducting interviews by video between any parties that have webcams. Will save a lot of time for both candidates and advertisers. Coming soon!

Vlog – short for video log.  Blogging with video!

Vquence – short for video sequence. A Vquence is a collection of short video previews which are put together on www.vquence.com. These sequences of video or ‘vquences’ are viewed in the Vquence player to allow you to gain a quick overview of the collection. There are hyperlinks behind each preview which will link through to the full-length video – wherever on the web it may be hosted.

Web 2.0 - refers to a second generation of web-based communities and hosted services — such as social-networking sites (like MySpace, YouTube and Facebook), wikis etc which facilitate collaboration and sharing between users.

White Label - we allow any of its advertisers access to its job search intellectual property for integration to their own website under a ‘white label’.  This is offered free of charge based on the interested party meeting and agreeing certain conditions. 

Wiki - a collaborative website which can be directly edited by anyone with access to it.  This site has its own wiki filled with useful content on jobs and careers.

Work fit questionnaire  - a tool that will allow you to ensure you achieve a good fit between your candidates and the role you want them to perform.  Coming soon!

Work Type – category that allows you to distinguish jobs by the type of work eg full time, part time apprentice, graduate etc.
